Wilhelm, W.W., McMaster, G.S., Rickrnan, R.W. and Klepper, B., 1993. Above-ground vegetative development and growth of winter wheat as influenced by nitrogen and water availability. Ecol. Modelling, 68: 183-203. Assessing the influence of nitrogen and water availability on development and growth of individual organs of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is critical in evaluating the response of wheat to environmental conditions. We constructed a simulation model (SHOOTGRO 2.0) of shoot vegetative development and growth from planting to early boot by adding nitrogen and water balances and response functions for seedling emergence, tiller and leaf appearance, leaf and internode growth, and leaf and tiller senescence to the existing wheat development and growth model, SHOOTGRO 1.0. Model inputs include daily maximum and minimum air temperature, rainfall, daily photosynthetically active radiation, soil characteristics necessary to compute soil N and water balances, and several factors describing the cultivar and soil conditions at planting. The model provides information on development and growth characteristics of up to six cohorts of plants within the canopy (cohort groupings are based on time of emergence). The cohort structure allows SHOOTGRO 2.0 to provide output on the frequency of occurrence of plants with specific features (tillers and leaves) within the canopy. The model was constructed so that only water availability limited seedling emergence. Resource availability (nitrogen and water) does not influence time of leaf appearance. Leaf and internode growth, and leaf and tiller senescence processes are limited by the interaction of N and water availability. Tiller appearance is influenced by the Correspondence to: W.W. Effects of sowing time and rate on crop growth and radiation use efficiency of winter wheat in the North China Plain

Crop depends on its canopy to intercept solar radiation to drive both assimilation and water, nutrient absorption for its growth. Field experiments, involving three sowing time and three sowing rate, were conducted at Luancheng Station to investigate the effects of canopy size and development on crop growth and radiation use efficiency (RUE) of winter wheat during 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 gr...

SSM-Wheat: a simulation model for wheat development, growth and yield

A robust crop model can assist in genetic improvement and cultural management of the crop. The objectives of this study were to describe a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) model and to report results of its evaluation. The model simulates phenological development, leaf development and senescence, crop mass production and partitioning, plant nitrogen balance, yield formation and soil water and ...

Water relations of wheat influenced by exogenous application of growth substances under moisture stress. Hafiz Muhammad Akram*, Abdus Sattar, Hafiz Saeed-ur-Rehman and Abbas Ali

Water potential is amongst the most useful parameters for the measurement of the degree of water stress in plants. With the objective of mitigating adverse effects of moisture stress on water potential, osmotic potential and pressure potential of wheat variety Inquilab-91, a greenhouse experiment was conducted using two moisture levels viz., normal moisture supply and moisture stress at crown r...

Growth Response of Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and Wild Barley (Hordeum spontaneum Koch) to Nitrogen

A greenhouse study was conducted to investigate the effects of nitrogen (N) on wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum Koch) interference with winter wheat (Triticum aestivum var. Pishtaz) by an additive series experiment. The experiment was conducted in a split plot design with 3 replications. Wheat plant height losses were on average 30, 10, and 10% in a wild barley density of 16 plants per pot with ...

The effect of post-anthesis water supply on grain nitrogen concentration and grain nitrogen yield of winter wheat

The effect of water supply during grain growth on grain nitrogen concentration (GNC) and grain nitrogen yield (GNY) of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was studied in the field experiment on fertile loamy-clay soil in years 2004–2007. The water regime was differentiated using mobile rain shelter (water shortage, treatment S) and drip irrigation (ample water supply, treatment W); rain-fed cro...
